Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park is one of the oldest game reserves in Africa and is located in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Characterised by rolling hills, river valleys and dense bushveld, the park differs significantly from the open savannas of Kruger National Park. This varied topography creates a unique safari atmosphere and makes every game drive especially interesting.

The park became well known for its important role in rhino conservation. In the mid-20th century, the white rhino in particular was heavily threatened, before successful conservation programmes in the region helped populations recover. Today, Hluhluwe–iMfolozi is considered one of the most important refuges for these remarkable animals.

In addition to rhinos, the park is home to the Big Five as well as many other animal species. Thanks to its well-maintained road network, Hluhluwe–iMfolozi is suitable for both self-drive safaris and guided tours, and is an ideal addition to a trip along the east coast.

Wildlife in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park

Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park is especially known for its impressive rhino population. Both white and black rhinos can be spotted here with a bit of luck. In addition, the park is home to the Big Five – elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo – as well as many other species such as giraffes, zebras, impalas and kudus.

Due to the hilly terrain and dense vegetation, wildlife sightings can be more challenging than in open savannas. Besides large mammals, visitors may also encounter hyenas, jackals and various antelope species. Birdwatchers will also appreciate the park’s rich diversity of birdlife, making it an exciting destination for nature lovers.
