Kruger National Park is one of the most famous and oldest national parks in Africa and covers almost 20,000 square kilometres in the northeast of South Africa. From open savannas to dense bushveld and riverine areas, the park offers ideal habitats for an exceptionally wide range of wildlife. It is especially well known for the “Big Five” – elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo – all of which can be found here. Thanks to its well-developed road network, the state-run park is ideal for self-drive safaris, allowing travellers to explore independently and at their own pace.

The term “Kruger” is often also used in connection with the so-called Greater Kruger. This includes several adjacent private game reserves such as Sabi Sands Game Reserve and Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. There are no fences between these areas and the national park, allowing wildlife to move freely. The key difference lies in the safari experience. While self-driving is common in Kruger National Park, safaris in the private reserves are exclusively guided and led by experienced rangers.

This combination of a public national park and exclusive private reserves makes the Greater Kruger region one of the most diverse safari destinations in Africa, ideal for both first-time visitors and travellers seeking a more immersive and luxurious wildlife experience.

Wildlife in Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is one of the most wildlife-rich regions in Africa. In addition to the famous Big Five – elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo – many other species such as giraffes, zebras, impalas and hippos can be found here. Due to the park’s diverse landscapes, wildlife is spread across the entire area, making every safari a new discovery.

Predators like lions and leopards are regularly spotted, while hyenas and wild dogs roam through the bush. Particularly impressive are the large elephant herds, often seen near rivers and waterholes. Birdwatchers will also be delighted, as more than 500 bird species are native to Kruger National Park.
